OUR ACTIVITIES
The HPC Lab research is focused on developing digital technologies to support scientific computing and data intensive applications. The activities are based on the design, operation, and evolution of High Performance Computing and cloud infrastructures, enabling advanced modelling, simulation, Artificial Intelligence, and data analytics across a wide range of scientific and engineering domains.
High-Performance Computing
The Laboratory manages ENEA’s distributed computing infrastructure, including the computing centres located in Frascati, Portici, Casaccia, and Brindisi. It designs, operates, and continuously evolves ENEA’s computing infrastructure, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security. The main facility is the CRESCO (Computational Centre for Research on Complex Systems) supercomputing infrastructure, hosted at the ENEA Research Centre in Portici.
The Laboratory develops and operates HPC infrastructures supporting computationally intensive scientific applications. Research activities include:
- Design and optimization of HPC architectures and computing infrastructures.
- Development of scalable solutions for numerical modelling and large-scale simulations.
- Performance optimization, benchmarking, and parallel programming for scientific applications.
- Integration of heterogeneous computing technologies, including multi-core CPUs and GPU accelerators.
- Support for computational science in energy, environment, materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and other research domains.
- Infrastructure monitoring, resilience, and operational continuity.
Scientific Data Management
The Laboratory develops technologies for managing, processing, and analysing large scientific datasets generated by simulations, experimental facilities, and observational platforms. Research activities include:
- Big Data management and analytics.
- Scientific data infrastructures and interoperable data services.
- Data visualization and interactive exploration.
- FAIR data management and open science technologies.
- Distributed storage systems and high-performance data access.
Cloud Computing and Digital Research Infrastructures
Research focuses on the development of cloud-based platforms that complement HPC infrastructures and enable flexible access to advanced computational resources. Main activities include
- HPC-cloud integration.
- Hybrid computing infrastructures.
- Container technologies and workflow orchestration.
- Cloud-native services for scientific computing.
- Virtual research environments and digital research platforms.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
The Laboratory investigates AI and Machine Learning methodologies that take advantage on the HPC infrastructure. Research topics include:
- Development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning based scientific applications.
