ABOUT US
We are the HPC Laboratory in the ICT Division of ENEA. Our Laboratory oversees the development of technologies and services in the fields of scientific computing and high-performance computing (HPC), supporting the research and development activities of ENEA’s Departments and, more broadly, of ENEA as a whole across all areas of activity and related projects. It ensures that modelling and simulation activities are carried out using state-of-the-art technologies, thereby maintaining the competitiveness of ENEA’s research and innovation activities in all strategically important contexts.
We develop solutions for the management and visualization of large-scale datasets (Big Data) generated by modelling and simulation activities, as well as by complex experimental facilities and open data sources. We are responsible for the operation of the infrastructure that integrates ENEA’s scientific computing and HPC resources, ensuring the availability of the computing resources required by users and providing secure access to both ENEA personnel and external collaborators working with ENEA to achieve its institutional objectives. Our team manages ENEA’s computing centres and oversees their continuous upgrading and expansion. It also conducts research and engineering activities aimed at developing next-generation technological solutions in the field of scientific computing and HPC.
Research and development are carried out in cloud technologies, focusing on solutions and applications for the open and interoperable management of data generated by research and innovation activities in the energy sector. In addition, we investigate Artificial Intelligence technologies to develop predictive neural networks and generative models, integrating machine learning techniques for advanced data analysis. The expertise available within the Laboratory provides the scientific and technical foundation for participation in research projects and collaborations with national and international partners in the strategic areas of interest of the Division.
The history of HPC in ENEA from 1961 to 2022 is available (in italian) at this link.
